8th Pay Commission: Pensioners and central government workers are anxiously awaiting the completion of the Terms of Reference (TOR) and the appointment of the 8th Pay Commission chairman. Over 1.2 crore central government workers and retirees are awaiting wage and pension revisions. It is anticipated that the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC), which was authorized by the Union Cabinet earlier this year, will go into effect in 2027. This will result in a significant shift in the pay scale for central government workers throughout India. The commission’s chairman, members, and formal Terms of Reference have not yet been revealed, though.

The 8th Pay Commission: What is it?

The Government of India periodically reviews the pay scale for central government employees through the Pay Commission. It impacts government workers’ pensions and retirement benefits in addition to their base pay and benefits. The 7th CPC, which went into effect in 2016, will be replaced by the 8th Pay Commission. The Pay Matrix, a system that bases compensation on levels and years of service, is the foundation of the CPC recommendations. It is anticipated that under the eighth CPC, the fitment factor—which doubles the current pay to determine the new basic pay—will rise from 2.57 (under the seventh CPC) to 2.86.

How much can be added to the salary?

Employees at Pay Level 1, for instance, who now receive a base pay of ₹18,000, might receive up to ₹51,480 in benefits. Level 2 workers are also eligible for benefits that range from ₹19,900 to ₹56,914. The pay rise for level 3 personnel is ₹21,700 to ₹62,062. Level 10 officials, including entry-level IAS and IPS officers, can receive benefits ranging from ₹56,100 to ₹1.6 lakh, while level 6 officers can expect their basic salary to rise from ₹35,400 to over ₹1 lakh.
